Once you master a tier, you can check the mastery options tab to find out what mastery gets you. Some items in crafting are cheaper to make than others, or use less resources for the SAME amount of points, so check the list carefully. You can also bid on or trade for better tools from other people, so the shops aren't your only option. If you play with friends, then you can each choose a different one to make things easier for all. So the idea is to really pick one vocation and stick with it. You can change crafting vocations, but you lose ALL experience in any professions that don't exist in your new vocation.

The five tiers are Apprentice, Journeyman, Expert, Artisan, Master. Once you reach that goal, the first tier is mastered and you can work on the next tier.
